Experimenting with tomorrow’s technology

Researchlab Autonomous Shipping (RAS)

To provide a catalyst for the development of Smart Shipping applications in the Netherlands, the whole chain must be brought together, from the laboratory to the market. Setting up a joint research agenda, including a testing and learning environment, with government, and the science and business communities, will help achieve rapid market penetration by new technologies. This will also create social opportunities in the areas of sustainable and efficient waterway transport, security, digitisation, economic growth, accessibility, and employment. By combining autonomous driving and shipping research, the Researchlab Autonomous Shipping (RAS) will enable cross-sectoral knowledge transfer and expedite the development of profitable use and business cases. This combination will create the scope for applied scientific research in partnership with the market.

The RAS will be addressing specific themes, such as autonomous navigation while passing bridges and through locks, autonomous mooring and unmooring, navigating autonomous and non-autonomous shipping traffic, platooning, and the influence on reducing CO2.
